Launch the Origin game engine and check for any updates available. If there are, don't delay and update Sims 4. Hi, This probably seems like a silly question but I cannot figure out how to udpate my SIms 4. I have no idea where to go to update it. Is it in the actual game or when I login to Origin. Someone please help. Thank you in advance.

In Sims 4 there are several ways to check which game version you have. This can be important information for troubleshooting or if you need to know if a mod your using is compatible with your patch level.

It's advisable to always play with the newest version but there are situations where you might not want to update right away (like on patch day if you want to wait until your favorite mods are updated).

How

The game version usually looks like this

1.xx.yyy.zzzz

  • xx = Changes on big patches
  • yyy = Changes on big and smaller patches
  • zzzz= Indicates if you are on Mac/PC and if you're running the Standard or the Legacy Edition
    • 1020 = PC Standard
    • 1220 = Mac Standard
    • 1520 = PC Legacy
    • 1620 = Mac Legacy

On the Main Menu

After starting the game, the version number will show on the bottom of your screen

Via Cheat

When you're in game, you can use the Cheat Version to check which version you have.

  • Open the cheat console with ctrl-shift-c
  • Type: version
  • Depending on how many packs you own, you might need to scroll all the way up in the cheat window to see the version
  • Close the cheat console with ctrl-shift-c

In the files

You can also check your files if you don't have the game open.

In documentsElectronicartsThe Sims 4 you'll find a file called GameVersion.txt. Open that with any text editor and it will give you your version. You will need to start the game at least once after patching to update the file. If it still shows an older version although you are certain, yours is newer, delete the file, then start the game and let it create a new one.

As an alternative you can check the following file: programs(x86)Origin_GamesThe Sims 4gamebindefault.ini. This file will update after patching. No need to start the game.

For Console

The Cheat Version also works for console but you can also see the information on the Options Screen of the game

  • Select the game and press Options (PS4) or Menu (XB1)
  • For PS4: Either click on Update History or Information.
  • For XB1: Go to Manage Games and you should find the same info.

It goes without saying that you should start off by removing all your mods and CC – if you use them – and making sure these files are all up to date before slowly adding them back in. If that does not work, you could try some of the other common fixes, like clearing your game's cache files.

What to try: Clear The Sims 4 cache

Navigate to your game files – usually located at Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/ on both PC and Mac.

1. Delete the localthumbscache.package file in this directory.

2. Go inside the cache folder and delete all files that end in .cache. DO NOT delete the actual directory.

You can also delete all the files in the cachestr folder, but don't delete the folder itself. How to install a rar file on pc. Deleting the spotlight.package file is okay.

Once you've done this try to start the game load the save file that's causing the Sims 4 to crash.

If this fixes the problem, you can slowly start adding your mods and custom content back. If the problem resurfaces, then then there might be an issue with your mods or CC and you need to update these.

Console players have been reporting that their games are still crashing, however. If you have followed all the steps to clear your game cache and try a new save file, report the Sims 4 crashing issue on EA Answers HQ for further assistance.
